Periodontology

Periodontology is the branch of dentistry dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease, i.e. the tissues surrounding the tooth, such as the gums, alveolar bone and periodontal ligaments.

Periodontal diseases such as gingivitis or periodontitisare the main cause of tooth loss in adults. Symptoms of these conditions include bleeding gums, swollen gums and, in advanced stages, exposed tooth necks.

Periodontal treatment includes scaling, curettage and, in more serious cases, surgical procedures for tissue regeneration. Regular visits to the dentist and good oral hygiene are key to the prevention of periodontal disease.
